In 1928 the Houston Post-Dispatch and the Remington Rand Business Service sponsored a contest where readers could submit images “drawn” on a typewriter. An image of silent film star and Wild West actor Harry Carey that earned W. Graham Darby, of 106 67th St., the first-place prize: a $60 Remington portable typewriter.
